Modern India's 'Mirabai' wins weightlifting gold

Modern India

Gold Coast, Australia: Chanu Saikhom is modern India’s ‘Mirabai’, who doesn’t sing devotional songs but she's a face of a strong and determined women weightlifter.

The 23-year-old Manipuri, who finished second at the Glasgow edition four years back, won the first gold for the country at the Commonwealth Games here on Thursday by picking up the title in the 48kg category.

She smashed her way to a new personal record as well as the Games record by breaking six records in six lifts to bag the top prize with a total lift of 196kg.

Moments later, her native village in Nongpok Kakching in Manipur broke into delirious joy while congratulatory messages poured in from the Indian President and Prime Minister besides cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar.

“I am my biggest opponent. I want to beat my best records to ensure that I improve,” Mirabai told wwwkhelupdates.com. “I wanted to break my own record,  which I did, and I’m happy.”

Last year, she won the World Championships in Anaheim, USA, which seemed to have motivated her a lot after she failed at the 2014 Rio Games where she failed to lift the weight in any of her three attempts in clean & jerk section.

“I am really satisfied to have won this medal. After the disaster at Rio, I made it a point to become the best in my sport. My next target is Asian Games," she added.
