Mohammedan to play for pride against Mohun Bagan tomorrow

KOLKATA: The league title had already been decided last week, but Mohammedan Sporting still hope to finish the campaign on a winning note when they take on champions Mohun Bagan at Calcutta Premier Division ‘A’ here on Tuesday.

Winning against the in-form Bagan will be a difficult task and Mohammedan technical director Raghunath Nandi and striker Philip Adjah Tetteh believe the Mariners Bagan will remain dangerous even though they have nothing to gain.

“A derby is always a derby. Nobody wants to lose. They want to show that they are the champions. We want to give our fans something to cheer for and we are also playing for the club’s pride.” said Nandi. “They have won the league but I am sure they will go for the kill. When you play Bagan, there’s always a lot of pride involved and bragging rights, I think they will come all out.”

Mohammedan lost to Tollygunge Agragami 1-2 in the previous match, and Nandi said they should’ve won it.

“It was frustrating to lose despite taking the lead. We didn’t take our chances in that game, but we can’t let that happen again on the morrow,” he added.

Adjah, who is expected to torment Bagan’s rearguard, said his side will give off their best to preserve their dignity.

“It’s a big game. We will play for pride and integrity. We have to give it our best shot as we always do,” he said. “It’s always a good feeling as a striker to get your name on the score-sheet, but I wish I could have scored more for the team. Football can be a cruel game, sometimes you play your heart out but you can’t get the result. We must raise our level after our poor performance.”

Mohammedan have no injury problems with Nandi has a full squad at his disposal while captain Lancine Toure will return to action after serving a one-match suspension.
