Mohun Bagan advance into semis with a 3-1 win over Lajong

BHUBANESWAR, Odisha: It seems things are getting better for Mohun Bagan, who brushed aside Lajong FC 3-1 to seal their place in the Super Cup semifinals here on Wednesday.

Sheikh Faiaz opened the scoring in the 12th minute while Nikhil Kadam increased the lead in the 22nd.

Abdoulaye Koffi pulled one back for Lajong six minutes later while an own-goal by Laurence Doe in the 60th completed an excellent by the Kolkata-side, who had finished third in the I-League.

After the unceremonious exit of Sanjay Sen in January this year, Bagan were in the doldrums till his assistant Sankar Lal Chakraborty got into the hot seat.

Chakraborty, a former player at Bagan, has nicely balanced the squad.

A third-place finish in the I-League was the best result that he could give to the fans during the short period after he took over the reins from Sen.

“I always say to the players that ‘Mohun Bagan is not only a club, but an institution. We’d try to repay the fans who support us’,” said the 42-year-old.

The green and maroon side will play the winners between Bengaluru FC and Neroca FC in the last four.
