Mohun Bagan struggle to get past Pathachakra in first match

KOLKATA: Mohun Bagan started their campaign in the local league with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Pathachakra here at their home ground on Saturday.

It was a match which both the teams would want to forget in a hurry as it didn’t had anything worthwhile moves as missed chances followed by couple of brilliant saves by Bagan keeper Shilton Paul were the highlights of the competition's second game.

Henru Kisekka scored the all-important goal from point blank in the 76th minute following a corner by Tirthankar Sarkar.

Bagan had some opportunities in the first quarter, but Kisekka failed to tap home Azharuddin’s through ball while Basant Singh’s attempted long-range went just above the crossbar.

The Mariners, coached by Shankarlal Chakraborty for the fourth straight year, has made some interesting signings including veteran Mehtab Hossain, Kisekka and Sukhdev Singh.

Pathachakra squandered one of their easiest chances when Dipankar Sarkar failed to convert a header from Budhiram Tudu’s cross.

On Friday, the tournament's opening match between East Bengal and Tollygunge Agragami was called off due to unplayable conditions following heavy downpour. Both the sides had scored a goal each.
