My work became easier due to Jeje, says Chhetri

MUMBAI: A hat-trick in his 99th match was something Sunil Chhetri should cherish the most, but the Indian captain was in mood to celebrate as he wants to reserve the moment for the Asian Games and Asian Cup.

Chhetri’s hat-trick guided the hosts to a 5-0 win over Chinese Taipei at the Intercontinental Cup here on Friday.

“I want to contribute to team’s win at the Asian Cup in August and Asian Cup next year,” he said at the post-match Press conference.

Chhetri scored in the 14, 34 and 60th minutes respectively while Udanta Singh (48’) and Pronoy Halder (78’) were the other scorers.

The Bengaluru FC captain is the only surviving member from the team which had played at the 2011 Doha Asian Cup while India has qualified directly after seven years.

Chhetri thanked his striking partner Jeje Lalpekhlua for the assists, which took his goals tally to 59.

“My work became easier due to Jeje. Two of my goals came from his assists,” he added. “He’s an amazing player and works really hard.”
