Partab scores as India overcome Vietnam in AFC U16 Championship

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia: India started their AFC U16 campaign with a 1-0 win over Vietnam in a Group C match 2018 on Friday.

Captain Vikram Partab scored the all-important goal from the spot in the 86th minute after he was brought down Dang Tuan Phong.

“We went for the three points and although we missed some chances I’m happy with the result. At this stage, no team is easy and Vietnam is a very good side. Our next match is against Iran. They lost the first match, but it will not be easy for us,” said India coach Bibiano Fernandes.

Vietnam started the match strongly as they fought for early possession against India who had stayed unbeaten in the qualifiers, but the Southeast Asians were under pressure once India pushed forward.

Had India not missed several opportunities, the margin could’ve been bigger.

Gurkirat Singh found space down the left and delivered a perfect cross to Partab, who timed his run perfectly as he skipped past his marker in the box but his finishing was tame as it sailed past the goalmouth in the fifth minute.

Vietnam also tried their best when in the 12th minute Dinh Thanh Trung made his way on the right and passed it square to Khuat Van Khang, who fired straight into goalkeeper Niraj Kumar.

Vietnam found a rare chance in the 64th minute as they broke free on a counter-attack but could not get their act together. (Courtesy: AFC)
