Prosenjit scores as Mohammedan Sporting open campaign with win

KOLKATA: Mohammedan Sporting Club kicked off their campaign at the Calcutta Premier Division ‘A’ League with a 1-0 win over Food Corporation of India (FCI) at the Barasat Stadium on Sunday evening.

Prosenjit Chakraborty scored the all-important goal in the 80th minute for his side, who last won the league way back in 1981.

Mohammedan had couple of opportunities including one long-ranger by Princewill Emeka, but it didn’t quite test FCI keeper Dhananjay Adhikari. In another goalmouth action, Tonmoy Ghosh’s cross was cleared by defender Amit Chakraborty in the nick of time.

Apart from these sporadic raids, Mohammedan strikers failed to convert half-chances into goals.

FCI, at the other end, relied on the counter-attack but were unable to find the gap in the Mohammedan back-line marshalled by skipper Lancine Toure.

FCI also suffered a crucial blow in the 37th minute when they had to replace their skipper Deepak Mondal, who picked up an injury.
