Qatar beat South Korea to progress to maiden semis

ABU DHABI: Qatar progressed to their maiden semifinal at the AFC Asian Cup here on Friday after they defeated South Korea 1-0 in the quarterfinal.

A superb second-half Abdelaziz Hatim goal proved the difference to claim a place in the last four.

Hatim’s thunderous effort from distance settled a tense yet absorbing affair as the 2022 World Cup hosts celebrated their first-ever semis in 10th appearance.

By way of contrast, the Koreans exit the tournament by the slenderest of margins having failed to make amends for their defeat in the final of the 2015 edition in Australia.

Qatar are yet to concede a goal in the tournament, equaling the record of continuous clean sheets from the start.

Meanwhile, Korea’s defeat as just their second defeat in last 21 Asian Cup matches.

There were chances galore for Korea among which one included Hwang Ui-Jo's effort, which was ruled out by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) for offside. Late and intense Korean pressure failed to find the equaliser they so desperately craved, leaving Qatar to progress amid scenes of jubilation.
