Rain washes out East Bengal’s opening match

KOLKATA: Calcutta league’s opening match between defending champions East Bengal and Tollygunge Agragami was called off in the second half following unplayable conditions at the former’s ground on Friday evening.

Both the teams were tied at 1-1 with the home side scoring in the second minute through Lalrozama Fanai following a Lalrindika Ralte free-kick.

But Tollygunge, coached by former East Bengal great Manoranjan Bhattacharya, equalized when Lago Bei hit home with a powerful strike.

As the rain's intensity increased, the pitch became unplayable due to water-logged in most areas including the midfield.

The referee called off the match as per the FIFA Rules and Regulations, which says that if the ball doesn’t roll on the ground, the game is liable to be abandoned.

“We are happy with the decision as the pitch was not playable at all,” said Bhattacharya.

The local organisers, the Indian Football Association (IFA), is yet to take a decision on the points or there would be a re-match.

“We would’ve loved to play the game. But we respect the decision,” said East Bengal Assistant Coach Ranjan Chowdhury.
