Salgaocar beat ONGC in penalties to advance into AWES Cup final

MARGAO: Salgaocar FC continued with their superb showing as they defeated ONGC 4-2 in the tiebreaker to enter AWES Cup final at Tilak Maidan, Vasco, on Wednesday.

Salgaocar will face Sporting Clube de Goa in the final on Saturday.

The tournament is being organised by the Association for the Wellbeing of Elder Sportspersons in collaboration with the Sports Authority of Goa.

After a barren first half, Salgaocar took the lead through Devendra Murgaonkar in the 58th minute when he capitalised on a faulty clearance by the goalkeeper following a Sanson Pereira freekick.

But ONGC fought back after Ghanaian striker Enock Cudjoe headed home the equaliser in the 84th to take the contest into the penalties.

Mackroy Peixoto, Sanson Pereira, Selwyn Miranda and Denil Rebello netted for Salgaocar while ONGC fumbled after Harkirat Singh had converted the first spot-kick.

Salgaocar goalkeeper Jaison D’Mello made two consecutive saves to deny F Lalwuanpuia and Nitesh Monda.
