Sardar Azmoun scores twice as Iran beat Vietnam 2-0

ABU DHABI, UAE: Sardar Azmoun scored a brace as Iran assured themselves of a spot in the AFC Asian Cup with an impressive 2-0 win over Vietnam in a Group D match here on Saturday.

Iran, who haven’t won the title after 1976, have six points from and are assured of qualification.

With one round of matches still to come, Vietnam must now beat Yemen to stand any chance of sealing their place in the knockout phase as one of the best third-place finishers.

Iran will complete their group stage fixtures against Iraq next Wednesday in Dubai while Vietnam face Yemen in Al Ain on the same day.

Qatar exude confidence

Meanwhile, Qatar coach Felix Sanchez said theywill not be changing their style of play when they face DPR Korea in their Group E clash in Al Ain on Sunday.

The 2022 FIFA World Cup hosts won their opening game against Lebanon 2-0, but struggled to convert chances into goals.

“Each match is different and we cannot renounce the way we play,” said Sanchez. “It’s difficult to change now, but we need to find solutions to be more close to the opposition’s goal.”

Abdulaziz Hatem and Almoez Ali scored, but they really had to slog to break Miodrag Radulovic’s well-drilled Lebanese side.

“Lebanon showed they’re a well organised team and they were very physical. This was the first game and it’s never easy to do the right thing all the time in the first game.

“But the team showed they were patient enough and, hopefully, in the next game we will perform better and do something that we couldn’t do in the last game,” said Sanchez.
