Saudis open campaign with 4-0 win over DPR Korea

DUBAI: Saudi Arabia opened their Asian Cup campaign with a 4-0 thrashing of DPR Korea in a Group E match at the Rashid Stadium here on Tuesday.

Both sides had met in the Continental showpiece four years ago, with Saudi Arabia winning 4-1, but DPR Korea went into the match confident of their chances.

Hattan Bahebri (28), Mohammed Al Fatil (37), Salem Al Dawsari (70) and Fahad Al Muwallad (87) were the scorers for the Saudis.

Al Dawsari's 70th minute goal ended a sequence of 19 passes - the longest move seen for a goal in an Asian Cup match since January 2011 (Shinji Okazaki for Japan vs Saudi Arabia - also 19 passes).

The opening minutes saw possession evenly balanced but as the match progressed, the Green Falcons began to dominate with their first clear chance coming in the 13th minute through Abdulaziz Al Bishi’s left-footed strike which just missed the target.

In another match, Ali Adnan swept home a brilliant, last-minute free-kick as former champions Iraq twice hit back to beat Vietnam 3-2. (Source: the-afc.com)
