Sony stars as Mohun Bagan overcome NEROCA

KOLKATA: Mohun Bagan coach Khalid Jamil continued his winning run after Sony Norde strike helped the Mariners beat NEROCA 1-0 in I-league at the Salt Lake Stadium here on Saturday.

Bagan moved to fifth with 21 points from 13 matches while NEROCA remained fourth (21 points from 11 matches).

The Haitian international broke the deadlock after he put through by Darren Caldeira in the 78th minute as the Bagan fans including Jamil broke into delirious joy.

The beleaguered coach had reasons to celebrate as he guided the struggling home team to their second successive wins after he replaced Shankarlal Chakraborty last week.

The first half ended goalless with both sides missing a couple of opportunities, but Bagan had a first look at the goal when Caldeira headed wide a cross from midfielder Yuta Kinowaki.

Omar El Hussieny then saw his lofted shot saved by goalkeeper Lalit Thapa in the 37th while two minutes later NEROCA forward Felix Chidi hit the side-net.

Jamil introduced Sheikh Faiaz in place of Azharuddin Mallick and opted for a second change when Henry Kisekka replaced Omar in the 57th.

The double substitutions didn’t pay any dividends as Bagan attackers struggled to get past the NEROCA back-line, but the home side heaved a sigh of relief when Norde found the target.
