DOHA, Qatar: Spanish athletes started their training camp at the Aspire Zone Foundation (AZF) in preparation for multiple international events.

The visit will also test the training and competition venues that will host the 2019 IAAF World Championships Doha, scheduled to take place from September 28 to October 6 next year here at the Khalifa International Stadium.

The 30-member delegation consists of coaches, officials as well as men and women star athletes including Miguel Angel Lopez, Adel Mechal, Eusebio Caceres, Marta Perez and others.

The delegation started their training camp by touring the training, accommodation and competition venues at AZF.

Focusing on Khalifa International Stadium, the tour included Aspire Academy, one of AZF’s members, and touched on its programmes, facilities and services as well as its ambitious programme to nurture young sports talent in Qatar.

“We have toured the facilities, but also acclimatised to the temperature and humidity so that when we come back next year we can deliver the best performance possible. I was particularly pleased to see the air conditioning system at the stadium,” said middle-distance runner Lopez.

The athletes also had the opportunity to tour the world’s largest indoor multi-purpose sports hall, which can host 11 different sports tournaments simultaneously and has a total seating capacity of 15,500 spectators across 13 separate multi-sport halls.

The athletes also visited Aspetar, the orthopaedic and sports medicine hospital.

“We came here because we want to test the atmosphere and facilities so we are fully prepared for next year. What we have seen is incredible. The facilities are magnificent and Qatar is already as good as ready to organise a top-notch competition,” said coach Jorge Marín.
