MOSCOW: The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) President Shaikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa thanked Russia for hosting an impressive World Cup while also welcomed Qatar as the next host in 2022 as the curtains came down in the month-long tournament here.

“The World Cup in Russia was a great celebration of football. They have set the benchmark for the organisation of future World Cups. On behalf of the AFC, I send our sincerest thanks to Alexey Sorokin the Chair and Chief Executive Officer of the Local Organising Committee,” said Shaikh Salman.

France beat Croatia 4-2 in a thrilling final here at the Luzhniki Stadium on Sunday.

“The focus and spotlight turns to Qatar. I know we can promise the football world a truly memorable Arabic welcome as the world’s greatest football tournament visits the Arab world for the first time,” he added.

Qatar won the bidding rights in 2010 and since then the country has seen a massive progress in terms of infrastructure.

The Qatar 2022 organising committee -- Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy (SC) -- had also put up installations at Gorky Park near Red Square.

Over the past six weeks, 180 professionals appointed by SC have been shadowing and observing the World Cup operation in the 11 host cities.

On top of that, more than 30,000 fans visited the activations managed by the SC here and Saint Petersburg, and been given a taste of the atmosphere they can expect in 2022.

“Qatar’s public interactions in Moscow and Saint Petersburg have ignited excitement among the global football community and the reaction has been fantastic, with fans and the general public very keen to engage with Qatari culture and heritage," said FIFA President Gianni Infantino.
