Super Cup: FC Goa, Chennaiyin battle for honours

KOLKATA, India: FC Goa and Chennaiyin FC will fight for honours at the 2019 Super Cup final at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar on Saturday.

Goa will look for redemption after they failed to win the 2018-19 Indian Super League title on the last day of the campaign, going down to Bengaluru FC courtesy of an extra-time goal.

Winning the Super Cup will help Sergio Lobera’s side overcome the grief.

Edu Bedia, who didn’t play the semis due to suspension, will be back for the final. It will strengthen Goa as they have been in great form, with the likes of Ferran Corominas and Brandon Fernandes all amongst the goals.

“Edu is an important player, but it’s a team game. The philosophy which we apply on the pitch is important. Not just one individual,” said Goa coach Lobera.

Young left-back Saviour Gama has been turning heads with his performances and will hope to elevate his fast-growing reputation with another solid display.

“I love the way we football and it suits the way the players we have in our team. I love that the fans are happy with how the players play,” added Lobera.

But 2017-18 ISL champions Chennaiyin had a disastrous campaign this season and finished at the bottom of the table. Winning the knockout tournament will be a big opportunity for Chennaiyin to give their fans something to cheer about.

“Unlike us, Goa came into the Super Cup after a fantastic ISL. For us, after the season we've had, I feel we've done incredibly well in our performances in the Super Cup,” said Chennayin coach John Gregory.

The teams had met in the 2015 ISL final where Chennaiyin won 3-2 courtesy two late goals.

Chennaiyin have remained unbeaten in their last six fixtures in the AFC Cup and Super Cup, conceding just one goal in the process.

“Every team is fallible. We are confident about facing FC Goa in the final. The games have come thick and fast, but the boys have rested well and there is a fantastic spirit in the camp,” added Gregory.
