Super Cup is like Poker, if you don't have a strong hand, you are out: Coppell

Super Cup is like Poker, if you don

BHUBANESWAR, Odisha: Jamshedpur FC coach Steve Coppell said that they are taking their opponents and I-League champions Minerva Punjab seriously ahead of their Super Cup match here at the Kalinga Stadium on Monday.

“We are taking tomorrow's match very seriously. We want to go as further as we can. When 20 professional teams are fighting against each other to prove themselves, it’s going to be a fierce and intense match. We are also here with the same intent and expecting nothing less than a taxing journey ahead,” said Coppell.

The 62-year-old showed respect for Minerva, who won the I-League last month.

“We have a great respect for them. I watched a few I-League games on TV and realised how competitive and tough the league is. Minerva are the champions and it is going to be very tough for us,” said the Englishman.

Asked how a knock-out tournament differs from a league competition, he said, “A Cup competition is always different from the league. You play one bad game and you're out of the tournament.

“It's something like Poker. If you don't have a strong hand, you can’t play. If you don't execute well, you are out.”

Meanwhile, Sumit Passi is back into the squad after a long injury lay off.

“It was very tough for me as I had to stay 11 months away from action. I’ve recovered and ready to give it a shot. I have played a couple of matches in the ISL also. If I get a chance, I’ll grab the opportunity,” said Passi.
