LONDON: Tottenham and Belgium midfielder Mousa Dembele joined Chinese Super League side Guangzhou R&F, the Premier League club confirmed.

Dembele was earlier rumoured to be changing club in the January transfer window and will cost Guangzhou 12 million euros ($13.5 million) and can expect to receive a significant hike in wages, having signed a three-year contract.

Dembele leaves Spurs six-and-a-half years after joining from Fulham and he made 250 appearances and netted 10 goals for the Lilywhites.

The 31-year-old, who played in Belgium and the Netherlands before moving to English football, moved to Spurs when they triggered the GBP 15 million release clause in his Fulham contract in August 2012.

In February last year, Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochenttino heaped praise on Dembele, describing the latter on a par with Argentine legend Diego Maradona.

“I have said before that he is a genius,” said the Spurs boss at the time.”
