UAE beat India 2-0 to stay in hunt for knockout berth

ABU DHABI: India failed to maintain their winning tempo after they went down to UAE 2-0 in a Group A match here on Thursday.

Khalfan Mubarak and Ali Ahmed Mabkhout, who has scored six goals in eight appearances at the Asian Cup since the start of 2015, netted the goals as the hosts kept alive of their hopes of progressing to the next round.

In another match of the same group, Thailand stunned Bahrain 1-0 and also remained in the hunt for a place in the knock-out stage.

Meanwhile, Bahrain, who drew with UAE 1-1, now need an outright win against India on January 14 to advance into the next round.

UAE’s clean sheet against India ended a run of nine matches without a shutout at the Asian Cup finals and is their first since January 2011 (0-0 vs DPR Korea).

The UAE will now look to guarantee their place in the Round of 16 when they face Thailand in their final group stage game on Monday while India will play Bahrain in Sharjah on the same day. (Pic source: AIFF)
