Ubaid hero as Gokulam stun East Bengal

KOLKATA: Goalkeeper Ubaid CK turned out to be hero as Gokulam Kerala knocked out East Bengal 3-2 in the penalties to advance into the Durand Cup final here at the Salt Lake Stadium on Tuesday.

The first semifinal had ended 1-1 after the regulation and 30 minutes of extra time.

The red and gold brigade had struck first through Samad Mallick, but a late strike from Marcus Joseph from the spot extended the match to a further 30 minutes.

The penalty was the result of a foul committed by Mehtab Singh, who received a direct red after he pulled down Kisekka inside the box.

Marcus calmly slotted the ball home from the spot for his ninth goal in the tournament and took the game into extra-time.

In the extra-time, both the teams failed to find the winning goal, but Ubaid denied Jaime Colado and Tondomba Singh in the penalties to help his side book their maiden final in the world’s third oldest football tournament.
