Unbeaten record is nice, but we need to carry on winning: Valverde

BARCELONA, Spain: Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde said the 2-1 win against Valencia was a step forward to winning the league.

“This was a red-letter day for us. It was essential to take this major step forward. To win it we needed heart out there on the pitch and to take the initiative with the ball,” Valverde told the media. “These are three golden points, and now we only need seven to clinch the Lal Liga title. We were able to regroup this week. And now we have the chance to win the Copa del Rey, and that’s another trophy that means a lot to us.”

Luis Suarez opened the scoring as Barca set a new record of 39 successive wins in La Liga.

“The fans got behind us and reminded us what a great league we’ve been having. But we know there are still some difficult games ahead,” said the Uruguayan international.

Barca lead nearest challengers Atletico Madrid by 14 points, with Atletico hosting Levante and fourth-placed Real visiting basement club Malaga on Sunday.

“The unbeaten record is nice but the more important thing is that we have carried on winning. I’d rather not single out any players for their performance. Every player in the Barça squad is capable of doing his bit for the team,” said Valverde. (Report & Pic: fcbarcelona.com)
