Up and close with World Cup legends

MOSCOW: The Moscow State University Library hosted an event that brought a group of football fans up-close and personal with football stars.

A group of students, volunteers and football enthusiasts had the chance not only to meet, but to ask questions and listen to World Cup stories from Russian Valeri Karpin (1994 and 2002 editions), 1990 FIFA World Cup-winner Andreas Brehme and former Spanish team captain Iker Casillas.

The talk show was conducted by Russian sports journalist Maria Komandnaya.

“The most thing is to work hard for yourself.  Back in the day we had to do that as well.  Especially me. My dad was also my coach and he taught me to work hard to improve my weaknesses.  So all coaches should help children to work on their weaknesses,” said Andreas Brehme.

The showpiece event will start from Thursday, with the hosts playing Saudi Arabia.

“In my opinion it’s a good initiative to bring players and protagonists from the pitch closer to the fans. But there is so much more going on behind. So a lot of people are working in order to enjoy the matches at home and in the stadiums.  I think it’s great to see what’s behind the cameras, what is the game itself,” said Casillas.
