We are growing in confidence as a unit, says India U16 coach Bibiano

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia: India coach Bibiano Fernandes is on cloud nine after his side held Iran to a goalless draw in a Group C match at the AFC U16 Championship on Monday.

But the former India international said the boys are ready to slug it out against Indonesia in their last group game at the National Stadium on Thursday.

India have experienced different highs in the competition, with a late goal in their first match against Vietnam giving them three points and a late penalty save by goalkeeper Niraj Kumar help them salvage a point against Iran as the South Asians inched closer to a first quarterfinal berth since 2002.

India not only soaked up the pressure against the Central Asians in the second half, but almost stole the game at the end with Lalchhanhime Sailo coming close in stoppage time.

“We are growing in confidence as a unit, I hope we can continue in our next match with Indonesia. They are a strong team who beat Iran, hence it will not be an easy match,” Fernandes told afc.com. “They have fit players and are very strong in attack but we will show how good we are in the third match and keep going ‘till the 90th minute.”

Indonesia and India are tied on four points and only need a draw to progress. Vietnam and Iran lie third and fourth respectively with a point each.
