Xavi hopes to complete double by winning AFC Champions League

DOHA, Qatar: Al Sadd captain Xavi Hernandez exuded confidence that the Qatari side is one step away from sealing a semifinal berth in the AFC Champions League.

The 2011-12 winners had beaten Iran’s Esteghlal 3-1 away over in the first leg quarterfinal last week.

“We did well, but there’s one more game. It could be just 90 minutes or it could even go to extra time,” said Xavi. “We did a really good job in Tehran. It was a very good performance and I think we were much better than Esteghlal in the second half.”

The 38-year-old World Cup-winner is playing in his first proper Champions League campaign this year as Sadd were knocked out at the play-off stage in 2016 and 2017.

“We now have a very good team. This season, we signed good players, such as Gabi, Jung (Woo-Young) and a number of Qatari players as well,” said the former Barcelona star.

The 13-time Qatar Stars League champions have not reached the semis since 2011.

“With a good result in Tehran, we are the favourites but as I mentioned, we never know what will happen in football,” he added. “Esteghlal have a good team as well and they will come here to compete, for sure, because Iranian teams are really strong.” (Source: AFC)
