Xavi to play his last match at FIFA World Cup venue Al Wakrah Stadium

DOHA, Qatar: One of the most high-profile footballers of his generation, former Barcelona star Xavi Hernandez will bow out from a glittering international career at the newly-laid 2022 FIFA World Cup venue Al Wakrah Stadium here on Friday.

The stadium – the second World Cup venue to be opened – is the first arena to be completed from scratch.

Xavi, who joined Qatar’s Al Sadd in 2015-16 season after an impressive career at Barcelona, will turn out for the one last time in the Amir Cup final against Al Duhail.

According to khelupdates sources, Xavi will take over as manager for his current club Sadd from the incumbent Jesualdo Fereira.

The Spaniard holds the all-time appearances record at Barcelona with 767, and scored 85 goals from 1998 to 2015.

He arrived at Barca in 1991-92 season for Under-12 team, and La Masia became the place where he learned the fundamentals of the midfield from the man who would become his friend and mentor, Pep Guardiola. Interestingly, Xavi later succeeded the current Manchester City manager as the backbone of Barca midfield for almost two decades.

Xavi debuted with the Barca first team under Louis Van Gaal, and was part of the team’s glory years from 1998 to 2015. He made his biggest leap under Frank Rijkaard and became a superstar under Guardiola. Xavi was the first captain of the team for his final season, following the retirement of Carles Puyol.
