DOHA: Qatar has announced the completion of Education City Stadium – the third tournament-ready venue for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.
The stadium’s completion was marked during special programmes on the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy’s (SC) social media platforms.
The highlight of the programmes was a speech by His Highness, The Amir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.
“As we celebrate completion of Education City Stadium, we greet champions of these times of medical staff and all frontline teams working against Covid-19, who saved the lives of many people and brought back hope to them. We thank you,” said Sheikh Tamim.
Nicknamed the ‘Diamond in the Desert’, the 40,000-capacity venue, located within Qatar Foundation’s Education City, is the first World Cup stadium to achieve a five-star sustainability rating under the Global Sustainability Assessment System.
“As the world begins to open up, it is through your courage, dedication and sincerity that we truly believe in better days to come, the days when we will enjoy together watching the stars of the game in our stadiums,” added Sheikh Tamim.
“Qatar is looking forward, and more excited and enthusiastic than ever, to welcome guests from all over the world for an exceptional World Cup. Thank you very much.”
FIFA President Gianni Infantino also participated in the online celebration of the completion of Education City Stadium, and expressed his thanks to the Amir for the opportunity to participate in celebrating the milestone.
“The new stadium in Education City reminds us that football will return, and with more passion than ever,” said Infantino.
