CALCUTTA (India): India will host the 2023 FIH Men’s World Cup after the FIH Executive Board announced their decision in Lausanne, Switzerland, on Friday.
“Hockey fans will have the opportunity to witness their national sport, and also celebrate the platinum jubilee of India’s independence by watching their favourite players,” Hockey India said in a media release.
It will be the fourth-time that India will organise the competition since its inception in 1971, after hosting the event last year in Bhubaneswar (Odisha).
Hockey India were among three who submitted a bid to host the 2022-2023 Men’s Hockey World Cup.
India, who hosted the 14th edition at the Kalinga Hockey Stadium last year, preferred the 13 January 2023-29 January 2023 dates window for the tournament.
The event was held for the first time in 1982 (Mumbai) followed by 2010 (New Delhi) and 2018 (Bhubaneswar).
While India will play host to the men’s tournament, Spain and the Netherlands have been named as the co-host of the 2022 Women’s World Cup scheduled to be held from July 1 to 22.
