DOHA (Qatar): Qatari shooters led by six-time Olympian Nasser Saleh Al Attiyah had a good showing on day one of the skeet event at the ISSF World Cup in New Delhi, but the tournament has been hit by Covid-19 cases.
Six participants, including two from overseas, have tested positive for Covid-19.
Top shooters from over 50 countries are participating in the 12-day event, which is being held behind closed doors due to the pandemic.
But it was a good day for the Qatari shooters with Nasser shot 74 targets to be on top along with Saif Bin Futais of UAE and Gurjoat Khangura of India but as per the count back rule leads.
Nasser, who is also a three-time Dakar Rally winner, missed one target in the first round of 25 but then had a perfect score in the next two rounds to finish on 74.
Two-time Olympian Rashid Saleh Hamad and Ali Ahmed Al Ishaq, both shot 73 targets along with six other shooters.
The second and final day of the skeet will be held on Sunday, besides the final round two more qualification rounds will take place today with the top six making it to the final.
The event in India’s capital serves as qualification tournament with many a shooter aiming to pick the Tokyo Games quota at the event.
Besides the three skeet shooters in the men’s section, Reem Al Sharshani.is taking part in the women’s event.
Qatari shooters will also taking part in the trap event in which Mohammed Al Rumaihi who has already got the Olympic quota for the Tokyo Games leading the challenge along with Nasser Al Hamaidi, and Saied Abu Shareb.
