DOHA (Qatar): Bahrain coach Helio Sousa exuded confidence ahead of their 24th Gulf Cup opening match against Oman on Wednesday.
“We are ready to face Oman. They’ve a great history and are the defending champions, but we are ready too,” said Sousa, who joined the team in March this year.
The prestigious biennial competition starts tonight while the final is on December 6.
“The Bahraini team is one of the founders of the Gulf championship. They’ve reached the golden box four times and is yet to win. We are here to play good football and achieve something,” added the 50-year-old.
“We are well prepared to win every game. The first game is very important. Our goal is to reach the semi-finals and then think about winning the title.”

Bahrain has taken part in all editions, but didn’t send team in the 1972 competition. They’ve finished runners-up four times and won bronze thrice.
“We had a training camp in Barcelona and then played friendlies against Asian teams. We’ve a great ambition to develop our own style,” said Sousa on the presence of European coaches in the competition.
