DOHA: Qatar Badminton Association (QBA) kick started an ambitious programme to take the sport to the next level by a tie-up with local badminton academies.
In its effort to identify and create a talent pool, QBA has joined hands with Association of Academies in Qatar (AAQ), an apex body comprising of private badminton academies in the country.
“The long term plan is for the 2030 Asian Games. It is time to identify the talent and groom them for the challenges which lie ahead for them,” said Heikel Lakhdhar, Technical Secretary at QBA.
QBA has also increased its coaching staff bringing in a few coaches from Asian and Arab World in a bid to make the game popular and attract more nationalities to the sport.
“We have now a Malaysian and Algerian coach working with QBA. We are closely working with AAQ to identify and groom talent and give them exposure,” he added.
As part of the plan, the 1st Qatar Open Junior Ranking tournament was started at Palestine School on Wednesday, with the finals taking place tomorrow (Friday).
