Buraidah: Al Duhail SC came from two goals down to defeat Al Taawoun 4-3 in a thrilling AFC Champions League 2022 Group D encounter at the King Abdullah Sports City stadium and booked their place in the Round of 16.
In Group C, Al Gharafa lost 0-1 to Iran’s Foolad Khouzestan in their fifth round match in Jeddah.
Karim Boudiaf opened the scoring with a beautifully placed header from close range after getting himself into position – both unmarked and unchallenged – to meet Nam Tae-hee’s pinpoint cross with just ten minutes on the clock.
Rayan Al Moussa almost managed to bring Al Taawoun level when Ze Luis missed a header from Alvaro Medran’s free kick delivery, with the club captain appearing behind the line and pouncing on the ball but his shot was weak and was easily handled by Salah Zakaria.
With 21 minutes gone, Leandre Tawamba restored parity after finding space between the two Al Duhail centre backs in a blistering attack that featured Medran and Sumayhan Al Nabit, with the latter picking the Cameroon forward with a low pass leaving him to slot past the keeper to make it 1-1.
