DOHA: India’s Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra won the javelin throw event ahead of Tokyo 2020 silver medallist Jakub Vadlejch at the Doha Diamond League here on Friday night.
The ace Indian athlete opened the season with a world-leading effort of 88.67m on his first attempt at the Qatar Sports Club stadium.
The 25-year-old came within touching distance of his personal best and national javelin record of 89.94m on his first attempt.
Chopra followed up his first throw with 86.04m in his second attempt. His third throw measured 85.47m before he fouled his fourth. His last two throws measured 84.37m and 86.52m.
Vadlejch wasn’t far behind and hit a season-best 88.63m in his second attempt.
It was the second time Chopra won a Diamond League meeting in his career following his maiden win in Lausanne last year.
Reigning world javelin champion Anderson Peters from Grenada threw 85.88 for the third place.
