DOHA: After becoming a world champion in javelin in Budapest, Hungary, on Sunday, Neeraj Chopra is regarded as an icon in India.
With a best throw of 88.17m, Olympic champion Neeraj became the first Indian athlete to win a gold medal at the senior world championships.
India has produced many top track and field athletes in the past including the legendary Milkha Singh, PT Usha, Anju Bobby George among others. But no one could win a gold at the Worlds.
The gold medal completed a very special set for the Haryana thrower, who has now won every major title in his sport.
Besides his Olympic and world championship gold medals and the Diamond League title, Neeraj is also an Asian Athletics Championships (2017), Asian Games (2018) and Commonwealth Games (2018) champion.
“This was great,” Neeraj Chopra said. “After the Olympic gold I really wanted to win the world championships. I just wanted to throw further. This is brilliant for the national team but it was my dream to win gold at the world championships.”
Neeraj will always be remembered as the ideal game changer in Indian athletics.
