DOHA: The U-16 national basketball team of Qatar have achieved a significant and historic milestone by securing a place among the top eight teams in Asia.
This accomplishment was attained after beating the India 87-84 in the quarter-final qualifying round of the seventh edition of the Asian U-16 Basketball Championship.
The competition serves as a qualification for the U-17 World Cup in 2024.
Saadoun Al-Kuwari, the Secretary General of the Qatari Federation, commended the team’s achievement and emphasized their punctuality. He expressed his expectation for the team to maintain their strong performance and high level in the upcoming match. Al-Kuwari stated, “Our national team demonstrated spirit and determination in overcoming India, especially considering our loss to them in the previous edition.”
Qatar will face New Zealand in the quarerfinals.
The Asian Championship serves as a qualifying event for the U-17 World Championship, which is scheduled to take place in Turkey from June 29 to July 7, 2024.
The top four teams from the Asian Championship will directly qualify for the Junior World Cup in Turkey, for which Turkey has already secured a spot. Currently, the participating teams include Egypt, Guinea, Spain, Italy, Lithuania, France, Germany, Argentina, the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico, in addition to the host country, Turkey.
