CHENNAI: Indian captain Rohit Sharma heaved a sigh of relief after India overcame a difficult Australian side by six wickets in their opening match at the ICC World Cup here on Sunday.
“It was a good game for us to start. I thought it was magnificent. Especially the fielding, we take a lot of pride in that part of the game. We saw the effort from everyone today. In conditions like this sometimes it can be tough, but our bowlers used the conditions perfectly,” said Rohit.
Virat Kohli made a crucial 85 while Steve Smith (46) and David Warner (41) top-scored in Australia’s total of 199 after they won the toss and batted.
India were in trouble after the loss of early wickets left them teetering on 2-3 before Kohli and KL Rahul rebuilt.
Kohli was caught at mid-wicket off the bowling of Josh Hazlewood (3-38) but Rahul (97 not out) saw India home.
