DOHA, Qatar: Novak Djokovic is feeling confident ahead of his singles return at the Qatar ExxonMobil Open after recovering from a muscle tear sustained at the Australian Open. The former World No.1, who eased back into competition with a doubles match alongside Fernando Verdasco, is set to face Italy’s Matteo Berrettini in the first round on Tuesday.
“I’m hoping for a strong start in singles. Playing doubles with Fernando in his final tournament has been an honor, and it adds to the positive energy,” Djokovic said.
The Serbian star assured fans that he is fully fit, having trained intensively over the past 10 days without any pain. “Monday’s doubles match was a good test for my body. It felt great, so I have no concerns,” he added.
Reflecting on his time post-Australian Open, Djokovic shared that his focus was on recovery, fitness, and family time in Serbia before resuming training. He also praised the Qatar Open’s elevation to ATP 500 status. “This tournament has a strong tradition and could easily be part of the Masters 1000 series in the future,” said the two-time Doha champion (2016, 2017).
At 37, Djokovic remains driven by competition, history, and personal growth. “I love the feeling of competing. The tennis court is a place where I evolve as a person, experiencing a wide range of emotions. Even after all these years, I still feel the nerves before a match, which is a good sign—I still care,” he explained.
Looking ahead to his clash with Berrettini, Djokovic acknowledged the challenge posed by the big-hitting Italian. “We haven’t played in a while, but Matteo is a strong player with a big serve and forehand. It’s not the easiest first-round draw, but it keeps me focused from the start,” he said.
With the Qatar Open boasting a formidable field, Djokovic is eager to make his mark once again in Doha.
