DOHA: Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) President HE Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani was renominated by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as a member of its Public Affairs and Social Development Through Sport Commission on Thursday.
Luis Moreno is the chairman of the commission, which comprises other prominent names such as World Athletics President Sebastian Coe and FIA (Federation Internationale de l’Automobile) chief Jean Todt.
Meanwhile, Dr Vidya Mohamed Ali, the Research Director of Anti-Doping Lab Qatar was nominated as a member of the Medical and Scientific Commission.
The 2020 IOC commissions’ composition, which is established by IOC President Thomas Bach working closely with the IOC Executive Board, also includes the appointment of two new female chairs.
Khunying Patama Leeswadtrakul, IOC Member in Thailand, was been appointed Chair of the Culture and Olympic Heritage Commission; and Zhang Hong, IOC Member in China, will be the Chair of the newly-formed IOC Coordination Commission for the 4th Winter Youth Olympic Games Gangwon 2024.
One of the key focuses of the Olympic Agenda 2020 reforms is to encourage the whole Olympic Movement to advance gender equality both on and off the field, and Bach said IOC would use the powerful platform that sport provides to promote gender equality.
