DOHA: Al Sadd captain and Atletico Madrid legend Gabriel Fernandez will rejoin his old club ahead of the 2020-21 season as Diego Simeone’s top assistant, according to multiple reports.
Radio Marca had the news first, reporting that Gabi will replace Mono Burgos — Simeone’s long-time number-two — from next season as the Argentine prepares to begin his own managerial career.
Gabi wrote on his instagram post that he won’t stay at the Qatari side beyond June 30, when the contract comes to an end.
The 36-year-old joined Sadd on 2 July 2018, and partnered veteran compatriot Xavi in midfield, and won the league in their first season together.
“Thank you Gabi for the two wonderful years! We wish you and your family the very best for the future. You’ll always be a part of the #AlSadd family,” Al Sadd tweeted on Monday.
He has made 55 appearances for Al Sadd over two seasons and has donned the captain’s band for the side.
