NEW DELHI (India): Indian women tennis team will face Latvia in the play-off for the Billie Jean King Cup on April 16-17.
It has been a historic one for Indian women’s tennis after qualified from the Asia-Oceania zone to the play-off for the first time.
Sania Mirza, Ankita Raina and Karman Kaur Thandi will join the team from Dubai and Germany respectively where they currently training.
“The players are excited and hungry to do well. Latvia has top-50 players. We have nothing to lose. We can only gain from this tie,” said captain Vishaal Uppal at the media conference on Friday.
The players will be in isolation on Sunday and likely to train from Monday.
“We are not getting the indoor facility on Monday. We will figure out,” added Uppal.
It is expected that the Indian side will be up against a stiff challenge from former French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko and her team.
“Everything depends on how we play on the day. We are not going to play the reputation of the opponents or their high rank. We will compete as hard as possible,” said Uppal.
