CALCUTTA (India): East Bengal coach Alejandro Menendez has stepped down from his position with immediate effect, the club said in a statement on Tuesday.
The decision to quit the job came 48 hours after East Bengal lost 2-1 in the season’s first derby to Mohun Bagan at the I-League on Sunday.
In Alejandro’s absence, the rest of the coaching staff will continue to train the team until a new head coach is appointed.
“I am happy for the progress the club has made during my tenure as the head coach. I wish to see the new leadership to take this progress to the next level. I enjoyed my duration with the club and wish the team and the fans all the best,” Alejandro said in a statement.
The red and gold brigade are currently struggling at the seventh position in I-League with just eight points from seven matches.
Under the Spaniard, the team has lost three consecutive defeats.
“We admire the leadership of the coach and the significant professional changes he brought at East Bengal in such a short period of time. He has led the team in the right direction. We thank the coach for his contribution and wish him much success for the future,” a statement from club’s sponsor Quess quoted its CEO Subrata Nag.
The New Year turned out to be a disastrous one for East Bengal, who lost to Churchill Brothers away and then against Gokulam Kerala at the Kalyani Stadium before the setback against Bagan.
