CALCUTTA (India): Legendary Indian footballer PK Banerjee was admitted to the Critical Care and put on ventilation support at a private hospital off the EM Bypass in the eastern part of the city on Monday.
“There has been sudden deterioration in the health condition of legendary footballer Shri P.K Banerjee. He has been shifted to Critical Care and put on ventilation support this evening,” said a statement from Medica Superspeciality Hospital.
The 83-year-old former Indian captain and Padma Shri awardee was a member of the 1956 Olympics team that finished fourth.
“He’s maintaining parameters post ventilation and is under close supervision of our panel of specialists comprising of Pulmonologist Dr Nandini Biswas, Internal Medicine and Intensivist Dr Tanmoy Banerjee, and he is also being supervised by the team of Neurosciences under the care of Dr L N Tripathy and Dr Sunandan Basu,” the press release added.
Banerjee, who became a top-notch coach after his playing days, was also one of the top stars in the Indian team that won the Asian Games gold in Jakarta in 1962.
“The entire clinical team at Medica is putting its best effort towards recovery of Mr Banerjee. His family members are being updated on his health condition at regular intervals.”
