DOHA (Qatar): The Qatar Tennis Federation (QTF) will host the 2021 Australian Open qualifying for the first time at the Khalifa Tennis and Squash Complex form January 10-13, QTF said on Thursday.
The qualifying will feature the participation of 128 with only 16 players to qualify to the main draw.
The tournament has been rescheduled to be held in Melbourne from February 8-21 to ensure enough time for quarantine.
Qatar has hosted several important competitions since sport activities resumed here in September.
The 2022 FIFA World Cup hosts already hosted AFC Champions League West and East Zone qualification rounds with the final scheduled on Saturday (December 19). The PSA Qatar Classic World Tour (squash) and FIBA 3×3 Asia Cup and Asian Qualifiers were held last month.
“It’s our pleasure to welcome all the players. We promise them with an exceptional experience which live up to Doha reputation as a major destination for world sports,” said Karim Alami, QTF Board Member.
“Selecting Doha to host Australian open qualifying due to coronavirus pandemic reflects the global trust in Qatar’s abilities” he told the QTF website.
Alami also stressed that the federation will do whatever does it take to ensure the safety of the players and to organize a risk-free event.
The world’s best players will compete for a record $71 million prize money at Australian Open 2021.
