BAGHDAD (Iraq): Former Iraq national team goalkeeper Noor Sabri has announced his retirement after a highly successful 20-year career.
Speaking in a televised interview, the 35-year-old goalkeeper said “the idea of retirement is complete now and I would like to continue coaching with my current club.
“I have a good relationship with Naft Al Wasat and I would be proud to coach the goalkeepers at the club,” he added.
Sabri took his first football steps at Al Sinaa before starting his senior career with Al Kadhimiya in 1999. After playing for several Iraqi clubs, Sabri joined Islamic Republic of Iran club Mes Kerman for one season.
The goalkeeper then returned to Iraq where he played for nine different clubs and won the 2014-2015 Iraq Premier League title with Naft Al Wasat.
Sabri then moved to Saudi Arabia where he played for second division outfit Hajar before returning last year to Iraq to join Najaf.
Sabri earned 100 caps with the Iraq national team, having made his international debut in the 2002 WAFF Championship title-winning campaign.
While he sat on the bench in the 2004 edition, Sabri played an important role in Iraq’s 2007 AFC Asian Cup triumph -conceding only two goals as he was named the best goalkeeper of the tournament. (Source: AFC)
