DOHA (Qatar): Bayern Munich winger Serge Gnabry suffered a strain in his Achilles tendon during the team’s training session here on Sunday.
The 22-year-old will not be able to complete some of the squad sessions at the team’s training camp in Doha.
“We had running practice this morning, and during that, that’s when he had to stop,” coach Hansi Flick told the club’s website.
Since Saturday, Bayern have been based at the Aspire Academy in Doha, where they are preparing for the upcoming second half of the season, staying in Qatar until January 10.
Gnabry will now be treated onsite.
“We have to treat it very, very seriously and hope he comes back soon,” added Flick.
For the tenth time in total, Bayern will prepare for part two of the Bundesliga campaign in Doha, laying the foundations for a successful second half of the season ack home.
Flick has just six days to ensure his squad achieves the “optimal level of fitness required for three competitions.
“It’ll be the first-ever trip to Doha for the 54-year-old, who promised “an intensive, tough training camp,” said Flick.
With a total of 26 players, Flick and his coaching staff will be working in Doha until January 10.
However, four players from the pro squad will not be making the trip to the country that will host the 2022 World Cup: In addition to long-term absentee Niklas Süle (torn cruciate ligament), Javi Martínez (muscle injury), Robert Lewandowski (groin surgery) and Kingsley Coman (torn capsule in the left knee) are also out of action.
The training squad is complemented by six young talents: Joshua Zirkzee, Sarpreet Singh, Leon Dajaku, Oliver Batista-Meier and Chris Richards from the reserves and U-19 defender Bright Akwo Arrey-Mbi.
