CAIRO (Egypt): Mikkel Hansen grabbed seven goals as reigning Olympic champions Denmark defeated Sweden 26-24 to win a second successive men’s world handball title on Sunday .
Denmark had defeated Norway to lift the 2019 trophy on home ground.
In the third-place play-off, Spain defeated seven-time world champions France 35-29.
Spain’s coach, Jordi Ribera, dubbed the bronze-medal game against France at Egypt 2021 as “a prize” after a long, tough and gruelling tournament.
“Firstly, I want to congratulate France for their performance and for their tournament. Secondly, I want to congratulate Spanish handball for having another medal and, thirdly, I want to congratulate the team for their performance in this tournament,” said Jordi.
“We had a good recovery since our first match when we drew with Brazil, and then step-by-step, we started to improve here and improving our performance.”
It did look like Spain were truly motivated against “Les Experts” and they executed the game plan to perfection, sealing their second-ever bronze medal at the IHF Men’s World Championship, after a compelling 35:29 win.
Despite falling to Denmark in the semi-final, it was a superb tournament for “Los Hispanos”, maybe the last world flagship event for their golden generation, as changes will surely be made ahead of the next World Championship in Poland and Sweden.
