Hangzhou (China): India beat Nepal by 23 runs in the quarterfinals at the Asian Games 2023 men’s cricket tournament on Tuesday.
India, by virtue of their global ranking in T20 Internationals, qualified directly for the quarter-finals, while Nepal topped Group A with two wins to make it to the final eight.
The current Asian champions scored 202 runs batting first banking on Yashasvi Jaiswal’s century (100 off 49 balls) and Rinku Singh’s terrific finish (37* off 15 balls). Nepal fought hard, but could only manage 179 runs in the second innings as India won by 23 runs.
India won the toss and chose to bat first, Yashasvi Jaiswal wasted no time getting going. He smashed two sixes in a row in the second over. Skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad (25 off 23 balls) was off to a bright start as well but took a backseat as Jaiswal went after the bowlers. The duo added 63 runs in the powerplay.
In the seventh over, with a big six off Sandeep Lamichhane over long-off, Yashasvi Jaiswal completed his half-century off only 22 deliveries. The opening pair of Jaiswal and Gaikwad completed a 100-run partnership shortly before Gaikwad was dismissed.
