DOHA (Qatar): The International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) welcomed the decision of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to keep all current Olympic events in Artistic, Rhythmic and Trampoline Gymnastics on the programme for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
The new programme has been drawn up in order to reach two main objectives – namely the limitation of the overall number of athletes to 10,500 and to perfectly balance female and male participation across the Olympic Games.
“With the emergence of new sports and the efforts made to keep the Games on a human scale for host cities, nothing must be taken for granted. We thank the IOC for recognising through this decision that Gymnastics events are instrumental in the attractiveness of the Games,” said FIG President Morinari Watanabe.
The IOC decision confirms that eight events in Men’s Artistic Gymnastics, six in Women’s Artistic Gymnastics, two in Rhythmic Gymnastics and two in Trampoline will be featured in Paris. The only change affecting Gymnastics is a slight reduction in quota places from 324 at the Tokyo Olympics to 318 in Paris.
The FIG will also work with the IOC and Paris 2024 to use Parkour as part of the youth-focused engagement plan – The French capital is the city where this urban sport was born. (Source: FIG)
