LONDON: England’s world champion 50-over side was thrashed by India in the first ODI at The Oval on Tuesday.
The batting line-up of World Cup heroes Jason Roy, Jonny Bairstow, Joe Root, Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler, who played together in a One-day International 2019 World Cup final, struggled as England never before had lost by such a margin at home.
“It’s a very tough day,” captain Buttler said. “We came third in a two-horse race. It’s tough to take.”
Not since 2011, when England were playing VHS cricket in a DVD age, have they lost by 10 wickets anywhere in the world.
“We have to try and analyse it as quickly as we can and learn as much as we can from it.
“It is obvious there was a little bit in the wicket and India exploited that brilliantly. Jasprit Bumrah was outstanding and these are the conditions that are toughest for us as a team and we have to find a way to counteract that.”
