DOHA (Qatar): Spain international Santi Cazorla expressed his delight at joining Al Sadd, after officially signing a two-year contract with the reigning Qatari champions.
“Al Sadd are the biggest club in Qatar and it’s a great honour to be here and to be part of this club,” said former Arsenal and Villarreal star Cazorla.
Asked about head coach Xavi Hernandez’s role in his move to Al Sadd, Cazorla said: “Xavi was very important in my decision to come to Qatar. He was my reference when he was a player, and I’m sure he’ll be the same as a coach.”
As for his ambition at his new club, the midfielder emphasised that he was out to “win everything.”
“We have to try to win everything, all the titles.”
Cazorla also praised Qatar’s infrastructure and capability to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup. “Qatar has everything, and I think it’s the best place to try and play another World Cup.”
The 35-year-old enjoyed a remarkable career revival as he returned to La Liga at Villareal following an injury-hit final two years with the Gunners.
He revealed his Achilles issue became so bad he almost had his foot amputated – but, after signing for Villarreal in 2018, he was soon back to his best.
His performances were so eye-catching he earned an international recall last year and was given a fine send-off by his team-mates following his last game for the Yellow Submarine on Sunday.
“I can only say thank you very much to all those who supported me, and I will try my best every day to help the team,” he added.
Meanwhile, Arsenal boss Arteta – who played alongside Cazorla in the Gunners’ midfield for four years – praised his former colleague and suggested he could one day look to bring him back to the Emirates Stadium.
