LONDON: Manchester City bounced back from ceding their Premier League crown to Liverpool to remain on course for a cup treble by beating Newcastle 2-0 to move into the FA Cup semi-finals on Sunday.
City will face Arsenal at an empty Wembley in the last four next month.
Kevin De Bruyne’s penalty and a stunning strike from Raheem Sterling got City back to winning ways on Tyneside after a 2-1 defeat at Chelsea in midweek crowned Liverpool champions for the first time in 30 years.
De Bruyne celebrated his 29th birthday in style by scoring a penalty in the first half to give Pep Guardiola’s team a well-deserved lead, and Sterling then secured our place in the last four with a sublime mid-second finish part time.
“We need more victories to qualify for UEFA Champions League. But we have two competitions we can win. We made the first step today. We are delighted after the defeat to Chelsea to be going back to London for the semifinal,” said Guardiola. “Fantastic goal from Sterling. For the penalty, I didn’t see the review.”
It was Man City’s 10th consecutive victory in the competition and the award for the FA Cup holders is a semifinal against Arsenal at Wembley next month.
“We started the game really well, really sharp and put them under pressure. We didn’t give anything away apart from one chance in the second half. We should have scored more but played really well and created enough chances to score a lot,” said De Bruyne.
